Graduate and Post-Doctoral Students

  • Taryn Berman

    Ph.D. Candidate in Experimental Psychology

Taryn is currently pursuing her PhD in Experimental Psychology under the supervision of Dr. Mathieu Roy. Her research focuses on how individuals make inter-temporal choices - decisions across time - about pain, and utilizes fMRI to examine the neural mechanisms involved. Taryn completed her Master of Science degree in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Victoria where she used EEG to study how impulsivity impacts decision-making.

  • Elise Desbarats

    Ph.D. Student in Experimental Psychology

Elise is pursuing a PhD in Experimental Psychology under the supervision of Dr. Mathieu Roy. Her research focuses on the impact of distraction from music and audiovisual material on pain perception, using fMRI, EDA and behavioral data to examine the underlying neural mechanisms. Elise completed her Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) degree in Psychology at McGill. When not at the lab she can be found at the sewing machine or the easel. After her PhD, Elise would like to keep studying the brain but also combine her work with Neuroscience Art projects.

  • Sophie Desjardins

    Ph.D. Student in Clinical Psychology

Sophie obtained her Bachelor of Arts in (Honours) Psychology at McGill in 2019. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology under the supervision of Dr. Mathieu Roy. Her research primarily relies on behavioural methods to identify psychological factors (i.e., cognitive effort, motivation) that help reduce pain, and she also uses fMRI to identify neural mechanisms that underlie distraction analgesia.

  • Erika Gentile

    Ph.D. Candidate in Clinical Psychology

Erika obtained her Bachelor of Arts in (Honours) Psychology at McGill in 2017. Presently, she is pursuing her PhD in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Neuropsychology under the supervision of Dr. Mathieu Roy. Her thesis focuses on characterizing the neuropsychological profile of patients with chronic pain and assessing psychosocial determinants and neural correlates of their dyscognition.

  • Zoha Deldar

    Post-Doctoral Fellow

Zoha is a Post-Doctoral fellow in Dr. Roy’s lab with expertise in clinical psychology and neuroscience. Her research explores the interplay between motivation, cognitive functions—such as memory and attention—and perception of pain. Specifically, she aims to understand how enhancing distraction through motivation, passion, and flow experiences can improve pain management. To investigate these dynamics, Zoha employs tools like EEG and fMRI, paired with social and psychological assessments.

  • Carlos Gevers Montoro

    Post-Doctoral Fellow

Carlos Gevers-Montoro is a chiropractor with almost 20 years of clinical experience in Spain. For 16 years, he also lectured at the Madrid College of Chiropractic (Real Centro Universitario Maria Cristina, Spain), where he filled multiple positions in the clinical department, from coordinating the clinical internships, to organizing the OSCE exams and acting as the Clinic Director. In 2023, he completed a Ph.D. in Neurosciences from the University of Montréal under the supervision of Prof. Mathieu Piché DC, PhD. He is currently a postdoctorate fellow at McGill University (Canada) under the supervision of Prof. Mathieu Roy, where he continues his research, predominantly focused on neurophysiological and neuroimmune mechanisms of nonpharmacological interventions (manual therapy, exercise) for chronic pain. His main interest is on the mechanisms underlying the development and relief of chronic primary low back pain.
